Farrah's eyes got huge as she gave me an incredulous look and mouthed, “little friend?”
I coughed to hide my smile. “Right, I'm sorry about that. Jeanette, this is Farrah Farstrider. Farrah, this is Jeanette LeCroix, Damon's, uh, his...you know, his um...person that made him what he is?”
“Sire, darling. I am Damon's sire.”
“Right, yes. Sire. This is Damon's sire.”
Farrah nodded. “And she lives in the city?”
“Yes.”
“And you're going to be staying with her there, in the city?”
I scratched my head. “I guess so. It would probably be best to take care of this stupid trial stuff as soon as possible, but with the Black Walker also coming after me, I don't know which would be better – dealing with it, or dealing with the trial...”
Farrah frowned. “What trial?”
“Oh! Right! So, long story short, Jeanette wasn't supposed to turn Damon into a vampire, and now that she has, the other vampires want to put them both to death. Obviously, I'm not going to let that happen, but, I mean, if they want to go through the trouble of having a huge trial or whatever, and waste their time with the official nonsense, then I guess that's their decision. We all know that if they determine that Damon should be put to death, we won't go down quietly.” Damon and Jeanette just nodded matter of factly, but Farrah looked horrified.
“You're going to go back into the city where a bunch of vampires are going to discuss whether or not they should kill you?”
“Well, not me specifically. I didn't do anything. But I'm not going to let them hurt Damon, so I guess they might want to kill me, too, when I start ripping throats out and stuff.”
Farrah stared at me. “Why...” She stopped and took a deep breath, visibly calming herself. “Okay, Delaney. We don't really have a solution for the Black Walker yet, and we won't until Rast comes back, anyway. He's working on a plan, and as soon as he's ready, we will take care of that issue. In the meantime, if you have to go back into the city to deal with...” She took another deep breath. “...the vampires, then that's what you have to do. I am going to take care of some things here, and then I am going to contact you. I can't come into the city, remember, but we will figure a way around that, too, if we have to.”
Hustler whimpered at my feet, and I knelt down to scratch him behind his ears. “Don't worry, buddy. I'll be back. Now that I know this place exists, there's no way I'm staying away.” I grinned at him reassuringly and patted him on the head. He gave a little yip and licked my face.
Farrah grabbed my shoulders as I stood back up, staring into my eyes with an intensity that forced me to take her seriously. “Do. Not. Die. Do you hear me? If you need help dealing with the outcome of the trial, you just remember that you have friends here.
